This blog documents the adoption and renovation of the Bellfield Street phone box, Portobello, Edinburgh. The phone box was earmarked for decommissioning by British Telecom and Portobello Community Council adopted it on behalf of the local community. The intention is to initally restore the phone box- an iconic example of British design – and preserve it for the community. Subsequently the aim is to convert it into “The Light Box” – by installing lights within the phone box to illuminate images on the glass from artists, school children – or whatever the community chooses.
A small team of volunteers – Portobello residents – will hopefully be recruited to set about restoring the phone box, and then preserving it for future generations.
Dear Porty,
I was hoping that I might be able to get in contact with someone who is involved in this project as we have a similar project happening in Cheltenham Town Centre. It would be great to speak to someone.
Best Wishes
Hi Stevie
Many thanks for your comment. I’ve emailed you directly. Kind regards, Steven Wheatley
Hi there Steven,
Could you get in touch with me? I’m thinking of doing a project on Porty High Street and would like to find out how you went about yours. Many thanks, Eva
Hi Steven,
I would like to get in touch with those people who are doing the same project (converting telephone boxes to a greenhouse) for my project. Could you please contact me? Kind Reards,
Misa
Hi Misa, I’m afraid all I know about the phonebox/greenhouse project is that it was in Isle of Easdale. Please check out the community website – they have a contact page – I’m sure someone there will be able to help you.

Good luck!
Hi Steven,
We wondered if you’d be interested in writing a blog post on the Porty Light Box on http://scotlandsurbanpast.org.uk? Scotland’s Urban Past is a 5 year project support community groups in exploring, understanding and recording their urban heritage. As we’re about to run a campaign on tiny buildings, we thought the Porty Light Box would make a great feature!
I look forward to hearing from you.
Bryony
Hi Bryony, I’m really sorry – I’ve only just read this message, I didn’t receive an email notification. I’m really interested in writing a post for you. I’m just about to go on holiday, I’ll try and get back in touch on my return. Many thanks for your interest in the Porty Light Box
